Spiny capers have been found wild in the Mediterranean, East Africa, Madagascar, South-West and Central Asia, the Himalayas, the Pacific Islands, the Indo-Himalayas and Australia.
It is present in almost all the countries of the Mediterranean basin and is included in the flora of most of them.
In Greece it thrives under perfect conditions and you systematically grow it for domestic consumption as well as export.
The caper flowers before they open, in the bud stage, are picked and placed in salted water with vinegar to form the well-known packaged caper.
