Florina peppers
Greek traditional foods Tagari SA
Florinis pepper is the variety of red pepper, which is grown in Macedonia. Its fruits are 15-20 cm long and 4-5 cm wide. It is plump with a sweet taste, suitable for salad, freezing or canning. They are rich in vitamins C, A, K and E.
After its long journey from South America (Brazil) to Europe with Christopher Columbus in the 16th century, it arrived in the region of Western Macedonia a hundred years later. Florina, Prespes, Veria, Aridaia, Kozani welcomed the new, then exotic, fruit. However, where this particular pepper thrived and adapted to the soil and climatic conditions, were the famous for their euphoric soils of Florina. By 1950, the D-shaped red pepper had developed into an important product of the region.
